Challenging Beliefs

People choose to believe many things: a wide variety of things.
Things that are not compatible with each other.
And then defend them with no evidence.
Most folks are offended when they encounter beliefs which are inconsistent with their own beliefs.
Careful arguments are critical for achieving the things we need to learn.
Not arguments simply between people or about people but arguments about ideas.
We need to examine careful histories.
We need to look closely at textual criticisms.
We need to submit our ideas to scrutiny: careful, careful, scrutiny.
It’s never too late to adjust our thinking.

There’s fine twisting curls.
If it were not climbing me it would have no height at all.

There was more that I could not say.
I loved you but you could not understand me.
You loved me but you could not understand.

This seems to happen often.
All over the world.
It’s hard to try on an idea to see how well it fits,
If you cannot listen and hear the whole idea.

You may die of thirst in the presence of a big glass of water.
You may die of hunger unable to see your place at the table.

Stone upon stone your glacier retreats,
But you are no more lost than you want to be.
We each need to want to not be lost,
And we each need not to define lost by what people around us think of us.

Imaginal Domains

I generally think you are referring to our “experience of ourselves and other things in the classical world”, right?

If so, I think you may be regarding some statements as solipsistic assertions that reality arises wholly from our imagination. But that’s not what I think it is. Our senses only assess a tiny fraction of the vibratory spectrum we might call ‘objective reality’. If we want to understand what we sense or discover more than we can directly sense, we employ the pattern-recognizing and pattern-making power of imagination. We settle into patterned ‘grooves’ of personal and social functionality and creativity. These become our realities, but I think they would better be called imaginal domains, or memetic vortexes.

I don’t concur with the suggestion that imagination is the antithesis of reality.
To me they are an integral fabric.

So, for me,
Truth is grokking the well-woven;
Responsibility is the ability to respond within our imaginal domain;
Validity or authenticity is recognizing other domains as co-real.

Patterns and the Seeming Chaos

Shapes and images advancing, developing,
sometimes dissolving before ever reaching clarity.
Orphaned lines floating in the mindscape and aching for,
yet resisting connection.
It’s a wonder that anything ever manifests at all,
even more so that perceivers should arise.

Patterns and the seeming chaos are generally so subtle or so huge
that they are missed altogether.
If it weren’t for advancing perceivers
surely all the bits and pieces would lose coherence and float apart.
But, bless them full, they are, and they pursue patterns
relentlessly defining more world and
encouraging more perceivers constantly.

Perhaps patient observation is the central characteristic.
Some say it is love.
Sadly,
a few accuse them of mind-jamming or
perception manipulation
for personal profit.

Beings Talk

Beings talk o’er tea in my backyard,
(An axe-free zone, you know.)
Without a care we can share our heart
In the yard where beanstalks grow.

Rest assured there was a row
When I first did the deed:
Trading up our holy cow
For the ugliest of seed.

But I would not exchange my lot
For a herd of fat bovine,
While communing in my yard, I got,
And is what I hold divine.

In here
We defy the demons
Of the strangled world
Out there.
We trade in cryptic currencies
And give time a little air.

The calculus of becoming
Is how we count our blessings
And inspirations aren’t exhaled,
But shout, “Credendo Vides!”

Beings talk o’er tea in my backyard,
(It’s an axe-free zone, you know.)
Without fear, here we share our heart
In the yard where the beanstalks grow.

Meaning

Standing rigid
in the sparkling river
he grips his cup downside up.

Dry and thirsty
he gathers his resolve
and curses cups.

Right it, please, I urge him,
but the message flows off the rim
into to the sparkling river.

Two Pens, One Book

(for the wedding of my firstborn)

A blank book begins on a pedestal.

Knock it off.

Spill some ink

deliberately.

Life is gloriously messy,

let it know that you are

participating!

Let it know

that you have both shown up

and that your team will make its mark

immediately.

You may not always write big and bold –

but do so now!

Claim this joint territory

with some reckless abandon

while you may,

so that your children will honor you,

and learn that real authority

derives from truth,

and never vice versa.

Karen Armstrong Conversation

Interesting conversation. I’ve read and listened to Karen for several years. She’s got it going on.Vodpod videos no longer available.

I don’t like the way Alan Jones interrupts so much, as if it were appropriate to do so.

Child of Anarchy

I was sitting on the shortest stool
So I wouldn’t draw attention,
But you glided over like a tool
and began to ply your question.

What’s the use? I wondered, when
Uncertainty is the fashion?
A decent seeker’s going to find
Something now and then.

True and precious friends
Have seen the splendid garden ruined
By the seeds of all pop certitudes.
So then what do you do?

How do you submit your findings
To a jaded child of anarchy?
